A False Sense of Security
I'd like to stress one more time that the techniques I've outlined here
should not be used to protect financial or otherwise sensitive information.
Anyone familiar with JavaScript and cookies will be able to get behind the
scenes and uncover what you're hiding. Nevertheless, I firmly believe that
most people have better things to do with their time. Just as your mom didn't go looking for the National Geographics you used to hide under your pile of smelly tube socks, she's not gonna go hacking into your cookie code to see what you're hiding.
This might sound harsh, but she just wasn't that interested,
and most other people won't be either.
So by all means, put your "Ode to Dabney Coleman" poem
behind a simple JavaScript password. It will keep all but the most driven
people away from your homage. Better yet, it will also make your content
seem all the more special because your users had to get past the velvet
rope to see it.
